Medicinal Reishi Mushrooms

Reishi or Lingzhi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is a kind of medicinal mushroom possessing anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory, antioxidant and other biological traits which render it to be used as medicinal herbs to combat against variety of diseases.

There two main methods of Reishi cultivation artificially:

A. On logs https://youtu.be/8y2T87EkBtc

Steps to grow Reishi mushrooms on logs

  1. Soak logs 12-24 hours AFTER plugging spawn.

  2. Colonization. After soaking logs for 24 hours put them to shade or place in greenhouse and cover with plastic to speed up the incubation process and keep them for 3-4 weeks. Every week look for turning white as mycelium starts growing after colonization period of 20-25 days under plastic cover.

  3. Fruiting takes 6-12 months. Keep misting water. Do not worry about the chlorine content in city water pipe as it won't harm the logs. Produce CO2 that helps cultivating fruits. Low height greenhouse with daring wall material is ideal environment for mushroom growth, it creates good conditions to form fruits. Darkness is about 80% (use shade cloth), provide humidity around 80-85% and CO2 existence.

  4. When antlers reach desired size, stop CO2 infusion to the air. For continued fruiting and conk formation we create environment with temperature at 78-85°F, 85–95% relative humidity, and 80% reduced light density. Ventilation with mis- maker was performed two times every day.

B. In growing bags

For in-greenhouse cultivation we use autoclavable grow bags. First, we inoculate grain spawn in glass cans. Secondly, we transfer grain with mycelium from glass cans to sawdust substrate in plastic grow bags. We allow antlers to form inside the bags on the top of the blocks (growbags). When the antlers have reached their desired size, we cut off the top of the bags to form conks by increasing fresh air that will cause the Reishi to start forming spore producing “conks”. Basically, to grow Red Reishi mushrooms there are the following conditions that have to be provided:

  1. Greenhouse with decreased light intensity by 80%

  2. Misting water system to keep high humidity

  3. Grain spawn incubation

  4. Colonization of sawdust spawn substrate
